The 0.03–10m⊙ Mass Function of Young Open Clusters

چکیده

We report the present day mass functions (PDMFs) of 3 young open clusters over a mass range from 30 Jupiter masses to 10 M⊙. The PDMFs of the 3 clusters are remarkably similar, suggesting little impact of specific conditions (stellar density, metallicity, early dynamical evolution) on the mass distribution. Functional forms are provided to allow quantitative comparison with MFs derived in other environments.

The Sizes and Luminosities of Massive Star Clusters

The masses of star clusters range over seven decades, from ten up to one hundred million solar masses. Remarkably, clusters with masses in the range 10M⊙ to 10M⊙ show no systematic variation of radius with mass. However, recent observations have shown that clusters with Mcl & 3× 10M⊙ do show an increase in size with increasing mass. We point out that clusters with Mcl & 10M⊙ were optically thic...

Dynamical Mass Estimates for Five Young Massive Stellar Clusters 1

We have obtained high-dispersion spectra for four massive star clusters in the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 4214 and NGC 4449, using the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. Combining the velocity dispersions of the clusters with structural parameters and photometry from images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, we estimate mass-to-light ratios and compare these with simple stellar p...

Galactic-Field IMFs of Massive Stars

Over the past years observations of young and populous star clusters have shown that the stellar IMF appears to be an invariant featureless Salpeter power-law with an exponent α = 2.35 for stars more massive than a few M⊙. A consensus has also emerged that most, if not all, stars form in stellar groups and star clusters, and that the mass function of young star clusters in the solar-neighborhoo...
